Hometown Furnishing Co

Furniture, Vintage Collectibles, and Handmade Items

Hometown Furnishing Co. is a multi-vendor furniture and decor shop in Standish that specializes in painted furniture and also offers vintage collectibles, local manufactured goods, and handmade items. The company opened in April 2021. Situated in a 7,000-square-foot historic building in the center of Standish at 1 Ossipee Trail East, Hometown Furnishing Co. is the perfect place to shop this Holiday season for an abundance of gift ideas and found treasures. There are 3 floors of 50 local artists, collectors, and entrepreneurs showcasing their merchandise.

Owner Eric Rollins also updates, paints, and revitalizes furniture that customers bring in, along with building custom tables and barn doors. A selection of vintage restored furniture can also be purchased there.

The building itself that Hometown Furnishing Co. is located in offers 18 rooms to peruse and an elevator to get up and down those 3 floors. It formerly was owned by the Thompson Family for more than 200 years and is one of the most historic buildings in Standish.

Being a former owner of a vintage shop, I remember how eager I would get for my open houses around the holiday season. There would be tons of fresh greenery and twinkling lights, and the shop, smelling of hot chocolate, would be well curated with vintage goodies along with merchandise I created from my own art embellished with vintage odds n’ ends. Visitors were looking for one of a kind unique gifts to check off their shopping lists.

I remember one young lady was excited to find a vintage medical bag, made of black leather well worn from years of use, still containing a few of the original medical instruments in the inner pockets. The goldleaf monogram proudly displaying the initials of the bag's original owner had faded overtime. This was going to be a Christmas present for her father, a doctor. A turquoise hued hand held hair dryer from the 50’s , still in working condition, was purchased as a gift for a hairdresser to display in her shop. One of my favorite presents was a vintage set of china from the 1970’s that was going to be a present for his wife, who had been a 1970’s bride. They had not had a big wedding and no bridal registry. Their daily dishes were a hodgepodge of different dish sets gathered over the years. This dish set was going to be a wedding anniversary present for his wife. I later learned how she cried and absolutely loved her gift. These were unique and meaningful presents for the lucky recipients.

Anyone can purchase generic gifts on Amazon - brand new and bulk manufactured. But when you purchase from a small shop, maybe family owned or with a neighbor, you are sharing with the recipient that they mattered, that you took the time for the perfect gift.

When you support a small business, you are supporting a dream. There is a little handwritten note card posted on a shelf at the store. It reads:

This Christmas …

Buy Local

Buy Handmade

Buy from people you know Buy from Self-Employed

Remember the Big Stores don’t do a little “jig” when they make a sale.

Make someone “Jig” this year.

As the notecard suggests, this holiday season be sure to shop local, shop at Hometown Furnishing Co. and find your own unique presents for family and friends and a little something for you.
