How to Build a Beehive

Give Bees a Chance

You might have seen this popular bumper sticker with its little play on words. I know that bees have been more of a focus in my life. Last summer, I had the privileged opportunity to interview with fellow agent and beekeeper, Geoff MacLean, and I learned so much about the process of beekeeping, its challenges, and its rewards. I was surprised to hear that it is really peaceful, BEE-ing in the moment, when you work with bees. I was excited to hear about local places taking on beekeeping in surprising areas like the Gorham High Bee Club. Thanks to the Gorham Public Works and the Recreation department, a bee yard was created with 2 hives for 20,000 bees located in a quiet corner of Robie Park, across from the Gorham High School. I was even more excited that these students have trained to become newly certified beekeepers.

People of all ages can enjoy beekeeping, and it’s accessible to almost anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort. Hives are easy to build, training to be a beekeeper takes time, but the end result is worth it. "Give Bees a Chance."
