Back Cove BBQ & Pizzeria is a one man operation opened in 2012 by Owner Dan Rubinoff. There have been a few different locations, and the restaurant name has evolved, but what hasn’t changed is Dan’s passion for making good food. As soon as you pull into the parking lot at 89 Ocean Avenue, the tantalizing smell of applewood smoked meats hits you and ignites your taste buds. It’s all about the smoke and type of wood chips used that imparts so much flavor to anything you smoke. Back Cove BBQ & Pizzeria is open Tuesday through Friday, 11am – 2pm, 5pm – 7pm, and other times by chance. I just happened to be driving by on a Saturday afternoon and that smoky aroma from the smoker parked out front of the business was wafting through my open car window… best advertising you can have for a BBQ joint. I pulled in and saw the owner working on an ice cream dispenser, getting ready for the grand opening of the Back Cove Creamery, just in time for summer. Although the restaurant was officially closed, Dan told me that anytime you saw his truck in the parking lot to come in. Even if it is a day off. By the way, delivery is also available through 2DineIn.com.
The menu of comfort food dishes includes applewood slow smoked pulled pork sandwiches, gyros, sweet Italian sausages with sauteed onions and peppers, sirloin burgers, a wide variety of specialty pizzas, and much more. And now an array of ice cold soft serve flurry treats with an assortment of toppings to choose from is available. Can’t forget about all the desserts being offered, all made by Dan. They are listed on the menu as “Indulgent Desserts'' and are certainly worth the trip to Back Cove BBQ just to sample a few of these tasty treats like lemon drop cake, New Orleans style beignets, warm fudge brownie bites, and always a winner, fried doughboy with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Finish off your meal with a freshly squeezed lemonade.
It’s not fast food, but food cooked fast. The owner is fond of saying that it, “Takes you longer to decide on the menu and what to order than it takes to prepare.” So true. It took me a few moments to make my selection. Would it be the Greek gyros, the bacon cheddar ranch burger, or the BBQ pulled pork sandwich? Had to go with the applewood pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and fries - afterall, it was that applewood smoke that lured me in. Hmmmm, maybe next time I’ll try the BBQ PPP, the Pulled Pork Pizza, with peppers & caramelized onions. Now the only questions are 12” or 16” size and who wants to join me?

On the edge of the West End, the bar and restaurant is not far from the Cross Insurance Civic Center, Old Port, State Theatre, and the PMA. For people headed to an art opening, sporting event, or concert, I'd say this establishment is a perfect go-to spot for a drink or snack beforehand or afterwards, with the added bonus of being within walking distance.
