Maine Street Bee

Did You Hear the Buzz?

8 years ago, self proclaimed Queen Bee Melissa Dupuis began her mission to create an organic line of beeswax body products that were safe, effective, and environmentally conscious. Melissa was concerned by the damage chemicals found in other body products cause to our ecosystems and bodies, as well as the use of excessive packaging harming our environment. She uses natural, organic, compostable, and recyclable packaging with zero negative impact on the environment. Even the gift cards are made of recyclable paper and not plastic.

Beginning small with a home studio in her dining room, the business quickly grew to needing a bigger place for production and product retail space. Maine Street Bee has opened up shop at 125 US Rt 1 in Freeport, the site of Freeport’s iconic Big Indian. Recently renovated, the space is bright, airy, and simply decorated with found natural touches of seed pods, shells, leaves and fresh greenery. The countertops are covered in small hexagonal tiles… a playful nod to honeycombs. An imaginative room divider made from recycled window panes separates the retail from the production space. Customers can see the process and the passion behind every product they create.

The shop offers a well curated collection of jewelry, leather goods, and homewares representing several dozen artisans along with a variety of honey products. One of their most popular items is their gift box offered at different sizes and price points. Each box offers a lovely assortment of beeswax body products and makes an easy gift for that special teacher, friend, or housewarming present for clients. Maine Street Bee beeswax body products are also sold in over 150 stores in Maine, as well as on a national and global level. Their Paw Protection products are a big hit in Germany and Switzerland.

Melissa’s background includes wearing the many hats of entrepreneur, mom, and beekeeper. She utilizes her bees for the creation of honey, natural beeswax skincare products, and pet products that she sells. Future plans include relocating her hives to the shop in what she hopes will be an outdoor patio space for beekeeping classes. She is one busy bee. Stop by and say hello.
