"Mary, Mary, quite contrary, How does your garden grow? With silver bells and cockleshells, And pretty maids all in a row." This nursery rhyme is about a girl who plants a variety of unusual things in her garden. I have been a gardener for most of my life, and like Mary, I search out the unusual for my gardens. For me, working in gardens is more like playtime and is just another Day in my Life. I have helped many of my clients either begin gardening or I've assisted them with identifying existing plants and shrubs at their newly purchased homes. No two gardens are the same. No two days are the same in one garden. It has brought me great joy and continues to be my personal therapy and my sanctuary from work life and life’s pressures. Working in my personal gardens has always given me an inner peace and enjoyment for all of my senses. I do some of my best thinking while pulling weeds. As an artist, my gardens are just another blank canvas for me to create.
"Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas." - Elizabeth Murray
I decided years ago to join the Gorham Garden Club as a way to network with other avid gardeners, passionate about playing in the dirt. These folks have become good friends. I mean who else can you start a conversation with like, "So do you have any ideas on how to treat Phoma Black Stem?" (Phoma Black Stem is a soilborne fungal pathogen for sunflowers.) Since 2021 it has been my pleasure to have served as President of the Gorham Garden Club, founded in 1931. I am proud of the work we do in our Gorham community including various beautification projects, the gardens at Baxter Museum, several gardens at Baxter Library, and most recently, awarding of scholarships for students working in agricultural related fields. One of our main fundraising events is a plant sale in early summer. So if you enjoy gardening and live in the area and would like to meet with other like-minded gardeners, please contact me for the Gorham Garden Club. So how does your garden grow?
