Known for skiing, the Bethel area is home to both Mt. Abram Ski Resort and Sunday River Resort. But when you are not hitting the slopes, there are a number of antiques and collectibles shops where you can find treasures and pass the time of day. You know I love antiques and collectibles, what can I say? I was a collectibles shop owner for years and love the thrill of treasure hunting. On a recent girl’s weekend up at a friend’s condo in Greenwood at the base of Mt. Abram, my friend and I found a treasure trove of goodies at the Steam Mill Antiques shop down the road in Bethel. The hours listed on their website are Monday and Friday MAYBE, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday BY CHANCE, and the weekend hours are 10:30 ISH - 4:30 ISH. Sounded like a fun shop and a must-see destination. Luckily we were there both Saturday and Sunday before the suggested 4:30ish closing times. The shop is located in a large circa 1820 farmhouse and barn, decorated with a vast array of vintage business and commercial signs, ironically none of which are for sale. Offering a wide range of collectibles including books, albums, dishes, artwork, furniture, and so much more. The owner told us that since his stock is always changing, you need more than just one visit to browse all the inventory. This is true. After our first visit at the shop on Saturday, we returned Sunday morning to purchase a few more items that we were previously mulling over.
