Stuff Seen on Showings (SSOS) - Creepy Doll

So there I was, showing a property in Portland to my buyers. It was a big house, lots of rooms, a bit dated, dusty and dark. We had gone through the house and only needed to finish up with the basement. Flicked on the light switch and proceeded to climb down the creaking and wobbly stairs. The basement had been partitioned into several smaller rooms to the left of the behemoth furnace. One was used as a workshop area filled with dozens of rusted paint cans of faded colors, another room with floor to ceiling shelving that would have been used back in the day for canning jars carefully filled with colorful produce harvested from the victory gardens, Now it housed a few empty glass mason jars and was covered in cobwebs and dust.  The last room was dark. I reached in and ran my fingers around the door jamb and adjoining wall feeling for any light switch. There was none. As my eyes got accustomed to the dark I could just faintly make out a chain before me, hanging down from the bare light bulb. I hesitantly took a few steps forward and reached out into the dark to find and grab the chain. Momentarily flickering, the light came on suddenly revealing the room’s contents. AND THERE SHE WAS!!!!!

In vintage glory and with no rhyme or reason for her placement, a 3 foot tall “walking doll" from yesteryear was propped up against a mirror.  To say we were startled is an understatement. Perhaps a few colorful word choices might have been uttered during the big reveal.  I am certain we were being watched as we cautiously moved around the room wary of what other surprises might be lurking before leaving the room and its sole occupant. To turn off the light, I stood as far away from the center of the room while remaining close to the door opening and my means of escape. With my arm extended as far as I could reach, I grasped at the chain. Click. The light went off and the room went dark once more.  It might have been my imagination, but I could swear that I heard someone whisper, “Mama”.
